About this course

This course is for all students who have graduated from a foundation level art/design/craft course.

The focus of Momentum Drawing Practice is to explore drawing in its broadest sense and to develop confidence in self-directed study. The tutor will introduce the subject brief at the start of the day, with a presentation. Plenary session is at the end of the afternoon and all students must attend.

This course is for graduates of foundation art programmes.

Using a range of techniques, explore how to use a sketchbook for primary and secondary research. This course will help you with your creative process and how to drive your projects forwards through:
-  examining ways to make sequential images
-  how to incorporate text and image together
-  making connections between your work and other artists

By the end of the day, you will have gained skills in developing a project, exploring techniques to create a focus and thread within your personal work.

ABOUT YOUR TUTOR: PhD University of Leeds & LAHRI Post-Doctoral Fellow, MA Central Saint Martins, is a painter who explores landscape through tracks, traces, paths, and tumuli. Melanie is a member of LAND2, a national network of artist/researchers with an interest in place-oriented art. She has exhibited widely and has work in both private and public collections.

Course Materials

What you need

PREPARATION:
ALL STUDENTS – it is useful to have your sketchbooks close to hand and a camera to photograph and share images of your work in progress.
You will also need a computer with a web browser to connect to Zoom that has in-built microphone and camera. Your wifi must be reliable.
Please ensure that your face is lit and camera switched on so that all students and tutor can see each other.

MATERIALS:
Pencils – range of HB/B
Plastic eraser eg Staedtler
Compressed black charcoal
Hair spray, fixative or tissue paper to protect drawings
Orange pencil or crayon
Blue pencil or crayon
Tissue paper (to smudge)

Your current sketchbook or a soft cover sketchbook, minimum size A4 (for example similar to this https://www.londongraphics.co.uk/frisk-kraft-cover-softback-sketchbook)

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
Ruler
Drawing board or hard surface to draw on
Scissors
Cutting knife
Metal ruler

WORKSPACE:
Table/ Computer

The tutor instructs health and safety issues relevant to this course.

Melanie Rose

Melanie Rose is a visual artist. She graduated from Trent Polytechnic with a BA Honours degree in Fine Art in 1987, then Central Saint Martins with MA in Fine Art in 2002. Melanie is a member of the practice-led research group Land2, has exhibited extensively, and has work in both public and private collections.
