About this course

The course will explore the spaces and surroundings of West Dean, drawing from interiors and the outdoors, looking at how painters have been inspired by their environment and sense of place.

Course Description

From the gardens and interiors, people and place – the character of the College and its surroundings is rich in subject and lends itself to artists for inspiration. Working directly from the environment, you will be led through a comprehensive course taking you from observation and transforming your encounters for the painters’ purpose. Working from drawing to painting, you will explore the spaces, landscape and life at the College and make a body of exciting work which reflects time spent in a place.

A change in place, an exploration of a new environment, and the scenes of everyday life have been a staple inspiration for artists throughout the centuries. Observing the spaces around the College and seeking out subjects that reflect its character, you will explore how to translate your observations of place into a drawn and painted reality.

Over the course, you will work in various media, venturing from the studio to sketch and draw from the environment, returning to develop your observations into more substantial, resolved painting. Looking at artists both contemporary and past, a way can be found to see and express something of your experience.

The emphasis of the course will lie in helping you find an approach which you can perpetuate beyond the course, nurturing your idiosyncrasies and interests, celebrating the plurality of approaches to painting.

By the end of the course, you will be equipped with drawing, painting and observational skills which are applicable to your own work beyond the course. With an emphasis on encountering the subject and responding with earnestness and observation, it is hoped that by engaging with the College’s rich living heritage, you will leave with an excitement to engage with your own place and time.
