About this course

Longevity is a highly regarded concept in Chinese culture and is represented through numerous symbols in art that are included in this course.

Course Description

During this course, the tutor will introduce you to the four treasures of Chinese brush painting, including ink, ink stone, xuan paper and Chinese brushes. Through demonstration and practice, you will learn how to use the Chinese brush, loading colours to achieve up to three shades in one brushstroke. The foundation brushstrokes and a number of techniques will be demonstrated for you to practise and apply to achieve traditional Chinese painting compositions.

The tutor will help you discover the legends of longevity, through painting the following: pine tree and cranes, peony flower and mythical phoenix bird, O’change the moon goddess and the jade rabbit. On completion of the course, you will have learnt basic brush strokes, techniques and have completed a number of traditional Chinese paintings.

The tutor will provide individually tailored support throughout the course, and you will have access to demonstration paintings, photographs and reference books. Detailed notes will also be provided for you to take home to continue your practice.

Timetable

Arrival Day - this is the first date listed above

Courses start early evening. Residential students to arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm.

6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included).

8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential.

Daily timetable

Classes 9.15 - 5pm, lunch is included.

From 6.30pm: Dinner (included for residential students).

Evening working - students may have access to workshops, but only with their tutor's permission and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Last day

Classes 9.15am - 3pm, lunch is included.

Residential students are to vacate their rooms by 10am please.

  • Students are welcome to bring along any of their own Chinese brush painting equipment.
  • White plate or palette, kitchen paper
