About this course

Handcraft a set of pewter salad servers and learn a range of traditional pewtersmithing skills. You will work with both sheet and molten casting pewter to create your own designs.

Course Description

Over two days Ella will teach you the traditional pewtersmithing skills needed to create your own set of pewter salad servers.

Starting the course with discussion and examples from Ella to demonstrate the possibilities of pewter, Ella will encourage you to create your own bespoke designs to suit your personal design style, please feel free to bring inspiration – the more the merrier.

You will then craft your bespoke designs using a variety of traditional pewtersmithing techniques. Ella will advise you how to achieve your own design and use her expertise to take you through the process step-by-step.

Through group demonstrations and one-to-one guidance Ella will teach you how to work with both sheet pewter and molten pewter, the two core process of pewtersmithing. Working with sheet pewter will include raising your spoon bowls with hammers from a flat sheet of metal to a three-dimensional form. You will combine these with cast pewter handles, which will involve heating and pouring molten pewter into moulds.

For the final day Ella will demonstrate how to incorporate further finishing details such as cold forging, hammer work and casting decorative details to suit your own design. Finishing the course with the important stages of filing and polishing your spoons so they can proudly sit in your kitchen and be used for years to come.
