Explore new and dynamic approaches to materials and mark-making, allowing you to develop free and experimental drawings and paintings. Making initial observations from a life model, you will use a variety of techniques and materials to develop exciting marks from sketches to a large-scale piece of work.
There will be a costumed life drawing session – an initial session, where you will create individual responses from the model who will be dressed to impress. You will work in monochrome with charcoal, ink, black and white acrylic. There will be a nude life drawing session where you will be encouraged to work expressively and freely, using various mark making approaches to create bold drawings. You will work in monochrome: charcoal, ink, acrylic, collage.
This will be followed by a costumed life drawing session where you will introduce colour to your drawings and paintings. You will experiment and explore with paints, inks and charcoal to give you confidence with your drawing.
Using the drawings/paintings you have made from the model, you will further experiment with a variety of approaches to drawing that will stimulate your imagination and help you develop more consolidated artworks. You will be considering scale, impact and the third-dimension to create dramatic and striking work. This session may include outside drawing/painting dependent on the weather. You will be using conventional and unconventional materials, including simple printmaking and construction. You will also consider the place of the model in various situations and locations to culminate in a group of considered artworks that will be displayed together in the studio. The work will be made by building up, collaging onto and extending previous work.
All sessions will be supported by demonstration, individual and group tutorial, reviews and discussion.

Arrival Day - this is the first date listed above
Courses start early evening. Residential students to arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm.
6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included).
8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential.
Daily timetable
Classes 9.15 - 5pm, lunch is included.
From 6.30pm: Dinner (included for residential students).
Evening working - students may have access to workshops, but only with their tutor's permission and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.
Last day
Classes 9.15am - 3pm, lunch is included.
Residential students are to vacate their rooms by 10am please.

Gary Goodman is an internationally renowned visual artist and poet. He has taught in various universities, colleges and other institutions since 1987, and has exhibited and read his poems in many places around the world. His artwork is featured in many publications and his poems published in a variety of anthologies.
