Work on your own potter's wheel as you develop your designs inspired by the ceramic collection at the College. You will be shown key techniques, including how to prepare and work with clay.
This course provides an excellent opportunity for beginners to experience working (throwing) on the potter's wheel. The first evening will start with an introductory talk about Jo's practice, a brief overview of the throwing technique and a discussion on what forms and shapes can inspire your making.
The first full day will start with clay preparation (kneading and wedging) and a throwing demonstration. You will be shown several techniques throughout the day and given one-to-one tuition and encouragement to build confidence. The second day will cover the finishing processes of turning, but allowing time for further throwing practice for those who wish it. The session will end with a group discussion and review of the work.
Everyone will have use of a wheel throughout the course. You are likely to finish the course with six to eight pieces.

Courses start early evening. Residential students to arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm.
6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included).
8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential.
Classes 9.15 - 5pm, lunch is included.
From 6.30pm: Dinner (included for residential students).
Evening working - students may have access to workshops, but only with their tutor's permission and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.
Classes 9.15am - 3pm, lunch is included.
Residential students are to vacate their rooms by 10am please.

Jo is a ceramicist specialising in wheel-thrown, functional and non-functional objects in porcelain. She has taught at all levels, including undergraduates, for 15 years and is a respected practitioner, a member of the Craft Potters' Association and regular contributor to Ceramic Review Magazine.
