About this course

Learn to paint with oils including: preparing your surface, colour mixing, tonality, brush handling, layering and completing a simple composition.

Course Description

On this practical course, you will be introduced to oil painting techniques as well as the fundamental starting points to painting. The tutor, who is lively and engaging, will teach you step-by-step how to prepare your painting surface, colour and tone experiments, palette preparation, colour co-ordination, use of mediums and thinners, and brushwork techniques.

Through practical demonstration, one-to-one support and exercises, you will learn the basics that will give you the confidence to continue painting at home.

At the end of the day, you will also have increased your knowledge of colour, tone and how to approach painting with oils. You will have completed a series of experiments and a simple still life study in oils.

Students should arrive by 9am for registration.

Classes are from 9.15 - 5pm

  • Paints and paint mediums shared amongst the group are included in the course fee.
  • Students are to provide materials listed below.

  • A3 canvas or a primed hard board
  • Sketch pad
  • Brushes:
  • Generally a good range of student quality – natural bristle or/and synthetic brushes, both flat filbert and/or round pointed.
  • Sizes: Large, medium and small
Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no open toes or sandals).

George Popesco

Since completing his academic training at the Royal Academy Schools London, George has taught extensively in varied Art & Design education structures alongside developing his own work and exhibiting both in group and solo exhibitions. George lives and works in Dorset, specialising in Oil Colour medium exploiting its tactile wet in wet qualities to form the mediums expressive and sculptural qualities.
