About this course

Learn the brush stroke techniques of Chinese brush painting by painting the iconic plum blossom, stroke by stroke.

Course Description

The tutor will introduce you to the four treasures of Chinese brush painting, including ink, ink stone, xuan paper and Chinese brushes. Through demonstration and practice you will learn how to use the Chinese brush, loading colours to achieve up to three shades in one brushstroke.

The foundation brushstrokes and a number of techniques will be demonstrated for you to practise and apply. The tutor will help you discover the symbolism of the plum blossom in Chinese culture and will provide you with individually tailored support throughout the course. You will have access to demonstration paintings, photographs and reference books. Detailed notes will also be provided for you to take home to continue your practice.

On completion of the course, you will have learnt basic brush stroke techniques and have completed a traditional Chinese painting.


Timetable for one day courses

Students should arrive by 9am for registration.

Classes are from 9.15 - 5pm

Lunch is included.

Course Materials


  • On this course the tutor will supply most of the materials for loan during the course.

What students need to bring

  • Students are welcome to bring along any of their own Chinese brush painting equipment
  • White plate or palette, kitchen paper
  • 2 water jars – jam jars are fine

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio. This includes stout covered footwear (no open toes or sandals).


Julia Martin

Julia Martin is a Chinese brush painting artist, enthusiast and tutor. Solely dedicated for over twelve years to this ancient artform, her understanding and artistic development is continuious via month long visits to China each year.
