About this course

An introduction to Procreate on the iPad, working and interpreting the local landscape. You will explore, brushes, colour, layers, photographing and image manipulation of our images as well as responding to the landscape in different ways.

Course Description

Since we were first exposed to David Hockney's iPad drawings over 10 years ago, artists and students alike have explored the possibility of digital drawing and painting. One of the most powerfully flexible apps on the iPad is Procreate, which for a little over £10 offers a vast array of digital brushes, pens, pencils, pastels and a huge amount of image manipulation capability. The aim of this one day introductory course is to familiarise you with the software, to enable you to use use the iPad and Procreate with greater confidence in your digital drawing and painting.

The course will introduce you to the Procreate interface, how to select different brushes and other drawing tools, change the brush size, opacity and the brush texture with the use of the Apple Pencil.

You will explore the creation of layers, selections and look at the variety of image manipulation possibilities within the programme.

The course will focus on the creation of digital landscapes and will explore how line, contour and colour can create visual space. You will consider the use of linear, tonal and mark-making in drawings and paintings to produce a range of reponses to both the observed and the imagined landscape. We will consider scale, distance, and perspective as well as visual contrast, and look at a broad range of other artists interpretation of the landscape from a historical and contemporary context.

At the end of this course you will have a lot more confidence with ways of approaching the landscape on the iPad and using the Procreate app.
