About this course

A guide to growing your own fruit, including selecting rootstocks and varieties, to general care and management, including pests, diseases and pruning.

Course Description

This course will give you an understanding of Top Fruit production and how and when to undertake various tasks needed to grow apples, pears, plums and cherries.

You will learn the principles of fruit production and how and what to plant. You will also gain an understanding of the methods and controls of tree fruit growing.

The main topics covered will include:

• Planting.

• Tree control – pruning and other methods.

• Varieties and pollination.

• Pest and disease – identification and control.

The tutor will use illustrated talks and discussion.

Booklist: Any good fruit growing book such as the RHS titles.


Timetable for one day courses

Students should arrive by 9am for registration.

Classes are from 9.15 - 5pm

Lunch is included.

  • Students should try to identify the soil type in their garden.
  • What size is their garden and what fruit is grown in the area?

John Nash

John is a semi retired farm manager with over fifty years experience in Fruit Growing.
As a town bred lad he was introduced into Agriculture via the Wilderwick College training programme that was introduced in the late fifties.
