About this course

Use basic components made from Perspex and polypropylene sheet to create an individual contemporary-style fan to your own design idea.

Course Description

Make a decorative fan using Perspex and polypropylene. This workshop will provide you with the basic components of a fan, including laser cut Perspex sticks and polypropylene sheet. These basic materials can then be customised through shaping and dyeing to make a completely individual decorative but functional object.

This course is part of our 50th anniversary celebrations – learn a traditional skill with a selection of 50 special one-day courses inspired by original 1970s subjects or focusing on heritage crafts.


Timetable for one day courses

Students should arrive by 9am for registration.

Classes are from 9.15 - 5pm

Lunch is included.

Course Materials


  • On this course the tutor will supply all of the tools and materials needed to make your fan.

What students need to bring

  • A sketchbook or paper, pens/pencils to sketch your ideas
  • Scissors and craft knife

Wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear i.e. no open-toes or sandals. Safety boots, if specified.


Sarah Macrae

Sarah graduated Brighton Polytechnic in 1981 and has combined her studio practice as a jeweller with teaching part time. A member of The Designer Jewellers Group, she has exhibited at the Barbican Arts Centre (London) for the last twenty eight years. In 2000 Sarah was invited to write an introduction to Jewellery for Crowood Press and she features in several youtube videos. Sarah's work can be seen on Facebook and Instagram.
