Use an inspiring array of sumptuous threads and your own sewing machine to sew pictures for a jewellery item or embroidered embellishment, and learn the skills to continue machine embroidery at home.

Course Description

Machine embroidery can be used and adapted into numerous textile projects and crafts ideas. Working with your own sewing machine, create your own stitched picture, jewellery item or embroidery embellishments and gain the confidence to continue stitching at home.

Explore the numerous techniques and textures created by threads and stitch, not to mention the delight of sewing and working with colour, with an inspiring array of sumptuous threads to use and try out, in different weights, thicknesses and make-up compounds.

You will be embroidering onto a cotton fabric and working with magical soluble fabric, where all the fabric disappears and only the sumptuous machine embroidery stitch is left!

This one-day machine embroidery workshop is suitable for both beginners and more confident stitchers who wish to try this wonderful medium. Machine embroidery is a wonderful and exciting medium and it can be used and adapted into numerous textile projects and crafts ideas.

Timetable for one day courses

Students should arrive by 9am for registration.

Classes are from 9.15 - 5pm

Lunch is included.

Course Materials

Included

  • All essential materials and fabric to stitch will be provided.

What students need to bring

  • Any reference material which inspires you – photographs, drawings, pictures from magazines, greetings cards, postcards and books e.g. of gardens, seaside, patterning etc.
  • A sewing machine, in good working order and with the ability to drop its feed dog teeth.
  • Spare bobbins, needles and a darning/embroidery foot, for the sewing machine (circle-shaped foot). If you do not have a darning/embroidery foot, you can use spring needles No. 80. You may also borrow a machine from the College but it is essential to reserve one by email in advance.
  • Sewing machine manual/sewing machine accessories (oil, screwdriver, etc.)
  • Size 80 needles
  • Any stitch and tear, stabilising fabric (if you have any)
  • Hand and machine embroidery threads (if you have any)
  • Any thread you have, suitable for the sewing machine

Please note: If you wish to use a College sewing machine, please email bookingsoffice@westdean.ac.uk to reserve one. Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear i.e. no open-toes or sandals. You may need safety boots, if specified above.

Tutors

Linda Miller

Linda Miller graduated from Winchester School of Art in1988, exhibit my machine embroideries and teach throughout Europe and the USA. I have pieces in private and public collections and my book Creative Machine Embroidery was published in 2010. I appeared on TV's channel 4 in Kirstie's Homemade Britain in 2011.
