About this course

Experience hand forging sterling silver using hammers to make a silver spoon as a special gift or a family heirloom.

Course Description

Learn how to transform a piece of metal from a rectangle into a bowl with a handle to make a long and thin or short and fat, twisted or curled spoon. Take control of the metal to produce a unique special spoon as a gift or a family heirloom.

Timetable for one day courses

Students should arrive by 9am for registration.

Classes are from 9.15 - 5pm

Lunch is included.

Course Materials

Included

  • Materials (and use of tools) including silver but please note that if there is a dramatic change in the price of silver, there may be an extra charge (or refund if the price goes down).

What students need to bring

  • An apron
  • Shoes that cover your feet (no sandals, flip flops or high heels)
  • Something to tie your hair back with, if it is long

  • Silver can be purchased from the College Shop which stocks a range of sheet, wire, rod, tube and findings. These will be available in set sizes and lengths suitable for a wide range of projects.
  • Tools
Please note: Hammering metal all day requires a level of physical fitness and strength in your arms.

Abigail Brown has been producing contemporary designs in silverware since graduating from Loughborough University School of Art & Design in 2001. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is widely collected.
