About this course

Delving into the sense of place through drawing and painting, using digital images, memory and the imagination you will create esoteric landscapes, drawing on the rich history of Romantic Artists.

Course Description

You will be exploring the concept of place in your work by incorporating symbolic marks, colours or gestures adding a deeper personal meaning to your paintings. Using sketchbook work (if you have any), photographs or online images of landscapes that hold a sense of personal significance. You might want to consider bringing in images taken by the light of the moon or early morning/evening or at different times throughout the year. Consider landscapes with a narrative or that have been used in literature, music, painting or that hold a meaning whether it is an ancient myth, legend or monument.

Throughout the day, you will begin to build a body of work that you may continue to develop at home. There will be demonstrations and hand-outs including working out a composition using shape, line and tone in charcoal, layering using watercolour and how to make and use egg tempera. There will be an opportunity to create hybrid landscapes using a combination of independent fieldwork and memory/imagination, drawing on the rich history of landscape painting from the Neo-romantic period as well as contemporary New Romanticism.

For this course you are encouraged to use your own materials avoiding acrylics or mediums which contain plastic.
