About this course

You will make textured scarves using hand-folding and hand-stitching techniques on fabric to create a three-dimensional design.

Course Description

Learn to design and make a scarf and also a smaller neck piece with a three-dimensional textured surface. Starting with selecting your choice of suitable coloured fabric supplied, you will make your scarf using hand–folding and hand-stitching techniques. Your design is steam-set to create the surface as used in shibori fabric. The tutor will also show you how to invisibly hem your finished piece, which will have a quality which is both modern and appealing.


Timetable for one day courses

Students should arrive by 9am for registration.

Classes are from 9.15 - 5pm

Lunch is included.

Course Materials


  • Most materials required for the specific projects set by the tutor, including fabric to make a scarf and a neckpiece. Also newsprint for steaming and aluminium foil.

What students need to bring

  • Hand-sewing needles in various sizes and a thimble (if you use one)
  • White sewing machine thread.

Nawal Gebreel

Nawal Gebreel uses innovative 3D fabric manipulations to produce her label’s luxurious scarves and wraps. She sells her work internationally as well as at home. Nawal trained as a textile designer at Manchester Metropolitan University and soon set up her own label.
