About this course

Learn how to create a small machine-embroidered landscape making textures with basic stitches. Fabrics are layered then stitched using an embroidery hoop.

Course Description

Learn how to use even the simplest domestic sewing machine to create a machine embroidered landscape.

You will be taught how to set up your machine for freehand embroidery, then working with an embroidery hoop, you will learn how to create landscape textures using basic stitches. Fabrics will then be layered and stitched into, creating a small landscape design. 

You will develop skills in machine embroidery and gain confidence to work on your own at home.


Timetable for one day courses

Students should arrive by 9am for registration.

Classes are from 9.15 - 5pm

Lunch is included.

Course Materials


Materials and tools supplied for the course include fabrics and some threads. Sewing machines and embroidery hoops are also provided.

What students need to bring

Scissors, pins
Images of simple landscapes
Any coloured machine threads you may have

Please note: sewing machines may be borrowed at the College - please email to reserve one.


Wendy Dolan

Wendy Dolan is an experienced textile artist, tutor and lecturer, specialising in freehand machine embroidery. She is a Fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen and author of Layer, Paint and Stitch.
