About this course

Explore techniques with porcelain and mixed media, using found and natural materials to create impressions in clay and develop patterns and textures in relief.

Course Description

This one-day ceramics course provides an opportunity to explore the delight to be found in combining natural materials with porcelain, and the joy and versatility in working with the material. You will be encouraged to develop your ideas and designs through experimenting and combining materials.

In this workshop, you will explore various techniques with porcelain and investigate how natural materials can be used to create layered and textured wall pieces. You will be introduced to techniques for hand building with clay, looking at how different tools, methods and approaches can be used and how different materials can work together.

The day will explore and investigate:

- the unique qualities of porcelain, in contrast to other clays

- ways of using techniques of slab rolling, pinching, moulding and joining

- how natural materials such as seeds, grasses, fabric, and objects can be impressed into clay or used as a press mould

- how coloured clay slips can be applied and combined with various materials by stencilling and layering them on the clay surface

- and how oxides, rust, fired clays and other materials can be mixed into and embedded in clay to create different textures and effects.

In the workshop, you will have the opportunity to create a set of wall plaques or small three-dimensional objects that make use of this material exploration.

The subjects covered and ideas shared aim to encourage and develop a set of skills and enthusiasm for continuing to make decorative items in clay.

Your work will be fired for you and either left unglazed or glazed with a simple clear glaze finish.
