Course Description

Discover this fascinating craft and experience the techniques used to produce beautiful objects for future heirlooms. On this one day course you become familiar with a silversmithing workshop, learning health and safety, basic skills, the properties of silver and also come away with a small silver bowl or box.

You will achieve not only a grounding in basic skills and workshop practice, but also produce a finished small bowl or box. You work with silver which is included in the price of the course.

Techniques used include piercing, raising and planishing with use of the gas torch and bonny doon press if making a box. A demonstration of each process is followed by individual tuition and notes are given covering all processes.

Timetable for one day courses

Students should arrive by 9am for registration.

Classes are from 9.15 - 5pm

Lunch is included.

Course Materials

Included

  • All the materials and tools will be supplied for the course including: Silver sheet and all tools.

What students need to bring

  • Note book and pencil/pen
  • Please wear shoes with covered toes in the workshop
  • Please email bookingsoffice@westdean.ac.uk at least three weeks prior to the start of the course with an outline of what you want to make. This will be shared with the tutor who may contact you.

Tutors

John Norgate

John Norgate a Fellow of the Institute of Professional Goldsmiths. Trained at Aspreys and Sir John Cass where he also taught for many years. In 2010 he was a gold and silver award winner at Goldsmiths for craftsmanship and design.
