About this course

Learn all about woodturning techniques and complete a simple turned bowl.

Course Description

This course is ideal if you've never turned before – but you'd like to have a go. It is designed to give complete beginners an introduction to the basics of woodturning, covering the lathe, safety aspects and simple bowl turning. The aim is to build confidence through safe practice.

You should leave with one completed bowl made in the day and an understanding of the lathe, how it works and safety considerations.


Timetable for one day courses

Students should arrive by 9am for registration.

Classes are from 9.15 - 5pm

Lunch is included.

Course Materials


  • On this course the College will supply materials and tools including the cost of timber blanks, and abrasives provided for the course.

What students need to bring

  • A notebook and pencil or a camera to record information (if you wish)
  • A roll of kitchen paper (optional)
  • Suitable clothing: overall or smock, plus sturdy covered shoes are essential. Long hair must be tied back.

Colin Simpson

Colin Simpson has been woodturning for over 30 years. He has been teaching and demonstrating woodturning for over eighteen years in his own workshop, throughout Europe, the USA and New Zealand. He is a past editor of world renowned magazine 'Woodturning', and now writes regularly for woodworking magazines.
