About this course

Learn to make a simple silver ring with a single cabochon or faceted stone as you learn about the basic tools and processes used to create original jewellery.

Course Description

If you would like to try making a piece of jewellery as a beginner or if you have a little experience and would like to learn to set a stone then this one day course would be interesting for you. You will learn about the basic tools and processes to make a silver ring and then to learn to set either a cabochon or faceted stone in a simple tube setting. The day will take you through the basic skills of sawing, filing, annealing, soldering, polishing and simple setting and will inspire you to want to learn more about this fascinating discipline.

Students should arrive by 9am for registration.

Classes are from 9.15 - 5pm

Lunch is included.

  • Silver for ring and setting, consumables (saw blades, solder, abrasives etc)

What students need to bring

  • An apron

Available to buy

  • The tutor will bring a selection of 4mm cabochon and faced stones to buy for between £1-£7

Tutors

Sarah Macrae

Sarah graduated Brighton Polytechnic in 1981 and has combined her studio practice as a jeweller with teaching part time. A member of The Designer Jewellers Group, she has exhibited at the Barbican Arts Centre (London) for the last twenty eight years. In 2000 Sarah was invited to write an introduction to Jewellery for Crowood Press and she features in several youtube videos. Sarah's work can be seen on Facebook and Instagram.
