Learn the fascinating techniques of Chinese brush painting as
you discover myths and legends of peony flowers and the phoenix
On this workshop you will paint two subjects, peony flower and phoenix, while exploring their unique symbolism relevant to Chinese myths and legends. You will explore a range of expressive brushstroke techniques that will enable you to complete a traditional style Chinese brush painting.
The tutor will introduce you to and demonstrate the 'Four Treasures' of Chinese brush painting, including ink, ink stone, paper (xuan) and the brush. You will learn about using a Chinese brush, and loading colours to achieve two or three shades in each brush stroke. By applying a variety of expressive brushstroke techniques a traditional style Chinese brush painting composition can be achieved. The brushstrokes you learn will enable you to capture the 'spirit' of the peony and phoenix. Both the peony and phoenix will be demonstrated brush stroke by stroke, then you will have time to practice the strokes and begin to form your own painting. The tutor will provide individually tailored support throughout the course, and you will have demonstration paintings to refer to. Detailed illustrated lesson notes will be provided to help you continue to practice and learn after the course.
On completing the course you will be conversant with basic brushstrokes, have knowledge of Chinese brush painting and completed a traditional Chinese painting.
