Visit to Ford / Sabin Studio

In early May a number of full-time Visual Arts students and staff were invited to visit the local studio of renowned artists Laura Ford and Andrew Sabin, located in former farm buildings just a few miles from West Dean. It was fascinating to see how a vast barn had been transformed into a space not only for the production of new work (on a large scale, in a wide variety of materials) but also for the temporary exhibition of finished pieces and installations.

As well as meeting with Andrew to discuss his work and the development of the studio, the students were also view various works by Ford and Sabin on display as part of the annual Open Studios trail.

Many thanks to Andrew and Laura for their hospitality and for the lively discussion of making sculpture and the role of the studio in contemporary art practice.
