Alumnus Exhibition and Commission

Lotti V Closs is the winner of the 2014 SYSON prize from Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery's annual Open exhibition, and will be presenting MASS, a solo exhibition of work at the Syson Gallery, Nottingham, from Saturday 16 May - 11 June. Lotti Closs has recently returned to her home town of Nottingham after completing her MFA at West Dean College where she was awarded Distinction and received the Vice Chancellor's award for exceptional performance. Last year she was also elected as a member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors and is currently part of Sun Screen - an online project commissioned by the East Midlands Pavilion for the 56th Venice Biennale.

Closs' work involves the creation of sculptural objects and partial environments, prompting an anthropomorphic reading of seemingly inanimate matter. Through an intriguing use of diverse resources, she attempts to characterise objects by exposing their inherent properties - giving them histories, hierarchies and contextual connections. This approach lends itself to a playful and intuitive attitude to fabrication methods, where much of the imagery is guided by the subconscious; the part-remembered or part-imagined. She also employs a range of personal interests in her work, including fictional and historical sources combined with observations on everyday experience and her immediate surroundings. Her boldly abstract visual language is balanced by a careful attention to detail.
