A rare glimpse into the Wyatt interior

West Dean College of Arts and Conservation recently acquired a new artwork, adding to its diverse and internationally important Collection. The watercolour shows the interior of the grand entrance hall in 1812; and was painted by Comte de Cely. The significance of the work lies in the new understanding it brings to Wyatt scholarship, the study of historic interiors, and the fascinating story of the College’s past.     Whose Heritage? Rethinking the West Dean Collection

    In late 2019, the Collections Team started working on a project to re-evaluate how the collections are displayed throughout the Historic House. The first phase of this is currently exploring the cultural legacy of colonialism at West Dean. The first stage of the project has included a review of the African collection which comprises a wide range of ethnographic objects, natural history, and archival documents.     Oral History Project - Memories of Edward James

    Some five years ago, West Dean College of Arts and Conservation took the decision to embark on a project to make recordings of memories of our founder Edward James, conscious that people who had known him were no longer youngsters. British Library trained Oral Historian, Jackie Herrington, has captured just under 30 hours of recordings from 24 different individuals, and there are more individuals to be interviewed.     A Closer Look at the Edward James Archive

    West Dean's Archivist, Simon Coleman, recently delivered an evening lecture to introduce the cataloguing of the Edward James Archive which is currently underway. The talk provided an introduction to the Cultural Papers and highlighted material found in both these papers and in other sections of the Edward James Archive.

    Q&A with Ami Bouhassane for International Women's Day

    International Women's Day 2018

    As part of International Women's Day 2018, West Dean College is profiling the lives and work of seven women, past and present. We will be celebrating women who have contributed to the cultural heritage of the College as well as those working now who continue to build on the legacy of conservation and the arts for which West Dean is internationally known.
