West Dean College of Arts and Conservation recently partnered with Outside In to deliver a training course to artists who find it difficult to access the art world for reasons including health, disability, social circumstance or isolation. The project, called 'Step Up: Exploring Collections', worked with six artists who each took inspiration from the West Dean Collection and Archive.
During the project, each artist selected an object from the West Dean Collection and Archive which they used as a starting point to develop their research skills, creating new and innovative interpretations that use the Collection as a point of departure to explore their own ideas and concerns. Their approach to the work is intelligent, dynamic, poetic, exciting and informed by the legacy of West Dean and the rich history of the artists represented in the Collection.
Day Dreams and Fairy Ointment - Where do they lead
5.00pm, The Old Library
Imagine you were sitting under a tree and fell asleep...
Imagine meeting a pixie, what might happen...
Imagine visiting a house and garden, what might they say…
Imagine you are a peacock tree, where might you fly.
In this 30 minute performance, storyteller Liz Porter will weave strands from traditional tales and songs together bringing poetic elements created during her time on the Outside In Step Up course at West Dean College into the mixture. You are welcome to listen with your eyes open or closed and to dive into your own serial imagination - what you see is what you see…
This talk celebrates the end of the project, with contributions from the artists, plus representatives from Outside In and the Collections Team at West Dean College of Arts and Conservation.
Visitors will also be able to view an exhibition of the work made during the project in the College's Foyer Gallery.
