She is a humorous novelist, columnist, broadcaster and radio scriptwriter. Best known for her 2003 book Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation, she has also written many short stories, comedies and monologues for the radio, and spent four years as a sports writer for The Times - which she wrote about in her 2009 book Get Her Off the Pitch.

Currently she is writing a series of comic crime novels set in Brighton in the 1950s, the first of which - A Shot in the Dark - won the Last Laugh Award for best humorous crime novel of 2018. The second in the series - The Man That Got Away - was published in July 2019.
