Press Release: Critical Paths - Visual Arts Summer Show

West Dean College announces 'Critical Paths', the Visual Arts Summer Shows for 2017, taking place first at West Dean and then in London. The exhibitions showcase the work of twelve students graduating from the full-time Visual Arts programmes at West Dean College, including Graduate and Postgraduate Diploma, MA and MFA degrees. Exhibiting students will present work developed over a year of intensive study, providing visitors with the opportunity to view original work by a group of emerging artists.

The exhibitions will include painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, textile, film, installation and automata. The exhibiting artists are Laura Luna Castillo, Sarah Cliff, Susan Evans, Lester Korzilius, Merna Liddawi, Chérie Lubbock, Barbara Mackie, Isabella Ramsay, Deborah Ravetz, Hala Sabet, Christopher Walker, and Askild Winkelmann.

A number of exhibiting students recently took part in the West Dean Arts & Craft Festival 2017, installing site-specific works within West Dean House, making reference to the legacy of College founder Edward James and his legendary connections with Surrealism, literature and artistic patronage. The Summer Show will see the students building upon the success of this opportunity.

"In the stimulating and supportive environment here at West Dean, I feel my art practice has opened up. I'm now more confident and look forward to showing the results of my year's work at the Summer Shows"

Chérie Lubbock (Graduate Diploma student)

"The Summer Shows, both at West Dean and in London, offer students a great opportunity to exhibit their work in different settings and to different audiences. The scope and ambition of the work on display is testament to the students' engagement over what has been a remarkable year."

Dr. David Stent (Visual Arts Programme Leader)
