Press Release: Travel around the world on a short course

Short courses at West Dean College offer an international flavour. The summer programme includes innovative arts and crafts from around the world, often with tutors from different countries, with a chance to learn from expert practitioners. Enjoy the immersive atmosphere and professional workshops at the college, set within the beautiful South Downs and treat yourself with an escape to West Dean this summer. Come on your own and make new friends or bring family or friends with you, and learn a new creative skill.

Japanese wood cut print provides the opportunity to explore the unique and subtle qualities of Japanese woodblock print. The course will introduce the history and technique of the ukiyo-e tradition and teach cutting and printing blocks by hand using water based inks, to achieve multi-block colour prints. Learn a variety of hand quilting techniques, focusing particularly on the Bangladeshi kantha technique, stitching multiple layers of fabric with colour threads and designs to construct a small piece or sample. Learn the techniques of making bojagi - a traditional Korean wrapping cloth, often stitched from fine fabric scraps. Become acquainted with its history and usage in Korean society. Make authentic Korean fabrics and interpret the traditional techniques to make a modern art form of your choice, such as body ornaments, art-to-wear and wall hangings. Bojagi and beyond - Korean stitched and pieced cloth with fibre artist, exhibition organiser and writer Chunghie Lee (NEW 25 - 29 September Four Days £471 Intermediate).

Learn the traditional way of making textured paper using water and eager hands and become familiar with is usage and role in Korean society. Learn techniques and its adaptation into contemporary art forms for functional or sculptural works. Joomchi and beyond - Korean paper art with artist, writer and lecturer Jiyoung Chung (25 - 29 September Four Days £467 Beginners).

Develop your own Japanese-inspired forms for creating poetic and free-form ceramics using traditional throwing and 'twist and cut' technique. On the last afternoon enjoy a traditional Japanese tea ceremony using your tea bowls.
