Chilli Fiesta at West Dean three day festival with camping 8, 9 & 10 August 2014 (2 April 2014)

West Dean has announced the 2014 dates for the highly popular Chilli Fiesta which will take place on 8, 9 & 10 August, 10.30am – 11pm (Sunday 9pm). New for this year are enhanced food and gardening theatres, a second performance area, even more attractions in the Vintage Steam Fun Fair, and rock school workshops for younger festival-goers, plus for the first year you can treat yourself to the 3-night Weekend Glamping experience.

Illustrated talk by former gardener to Edward James to open Mexican Weekend at West Dean 13 – 15 June 2014 (11 March 2014)

A Mexican themed weekend of short courses (13 – 15 June) at West Dean starts with an illustrated talk by garden designer and creator, Ivan Hicks. Hicks was former Head Gardener to Edward James, poet and supporter of the Surrealists and founder of The Edward James Foundation, which celebrates 50 years in 2014 and worked with James to develop his Mexican jungle garden.

West Dean conservators in Partnership with the National Jazz Archive (5 March 2014)

Book conservators at West Dean College have been commissioned to appraise the heritage collections at The National Jazz Archive in a six month partnership project. West Dean is working with the National Jazz Archive as part of a three-year access development project enabling the collection to be fully conserved and catalogued for the first time.

A talented young clock conservator, Jonathon Kelly, is being given an opportunity to work on a rare 18th century musical and mechanical clock by George Pyke at West Dean. The renowned College has been commissioned to carry out conservation work on the clock which is rumoured to have belonged to Marie Antoinette.

The Books Conservation department at West Dean College has been commissioned to work on a rare piece of handwritten text by Jane Austen, and pasted into a First Edition of The Memoirs of Jane Austen (1870) a book written by Jane’s nephew, James Edward Austen Leigh.

The Grade II* Listed, flint-faced house offers State Rooms and a 90-seat auditorium. Children go FREE at West Dean Gardens (and bring your dog too!) (22 January 2014)

West Dean Gardens is to reopen after its winter break on 1 February and this year, for the first time, gardens visitors will be able to bring their dogs (on short leads) into the grounds to enjoy the fabulous walks on offer in the parkland, grounds and Arboretum, and children will get FREE entry throughout the year (excluding events).

West Dean College has appointed Francine Norris as its new Director of Education effective from January 2014, to take over from Roger Bown who retires later this year. She will oversee the range of full time graduate and postgraduate programmes offered by the College in Visual Arts, Conservation and Making Stringed Musical Instruments, many of which are validated by the University of Sussex.
