Drawing and painting interiors - colour and light

Katie Sollohub

Katie studied Anthropology and Fine Art. She teaches freelance and in 2014 she received an Arts Council Award for a residency at Turner's House and again in 2021 for a project about sea-swimming. Working in charcoal, mixed media, watercolour and oils, her work has been shortlisted for the Jerwood Drawing Prize, the Lynne Painter Stainers Prize and the RA Summer Show. In 2020 she was awarded first prize in the Derwent Drawing Prize.

Katie is also teaching short courses at the West Dean London Bloomsbury campus. (Please see the link in the Short Courses toolbar on the website)

What is your approach to teaching?

Teaching is a chance to share my enthusiasm for looking, experimenting, discovering. Drawing and painting is a process to be explored. Be curious, and find your own way of seeing.

What inspires your work?

I am fascinated by interior spaces: my own home and studio, other people's homes. Starting with observation of space, light, line and colour, I am drawn into memory, stories and personal experience.

Awards
Katie won first place for the 2020 Derwent Art Prize with her piece Blue Bedchamber. Effortlessly evoking a feeling of light and breeze, her winning piece represents Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham, a heritage site where she worked in 2017.
