This section offers such a wide variety of courses that it needs to be studied in detail. On our courses students can create images in textiles, or make accessories and textiles for various domestic uses. A wide variety of sewing, art textiles, woven and constructed textiles are offered.

Techniques include: Screen printing, Digital textile design, Mixed media textiles, Stitched textiles, Hand embroidery and Stitch, Machine embroidery, Beadwork, Quilt making, Patchwork, Lampshade making, Pattern cutting and dress making techniques, Silk painting, Shibori, Batik, art textiles, Felt making, Tapestry weaving, Millinery, Lacemaking, Tassel and braid making, Weaving, Hand knitting and crochet, Natural dyeing, Leather work and accessories.

Textile Bursary fund

Joyce Mary Harding Textile Bursary Fund for people with an interest in developing their skills in working with textiles, who would benefit from assistance with funding. Funding generously provided by two individual donors.

To apply for a bursary please email alison.baxter@westdean.org.uk with some images of your work and an outline of what you hope to gain by attending a textile short course.

Workshops and equipment

Most textile courses take place either in the Main Workshop on the ground floor, or in one of the upper Art Studios, reached by stairs or a stair-lift. Appropriate equipment is available in these spaces. Visits to our professional tapestry weaving studio can be arranged during your course.
