The unique ruinette at West Dean - on which students can practise conservation and repair techniques - is a purpose-built indoor structure exhibiting many of the problems found on historic buildings and is used in many of the courses.

During the Conservation and Repair of Architectural and Structural Metalwork course, students spend time in the Forge and are able to try out traditional and modern techniques relevant to architectural conservation such as forging at the hearth, arc and gas welding, flame cutting and needle gunning.
