Yarn has an ability to represent colour more effectively than any other medium. Dyed wool has an intensity far stronger than that of paint or pencil. Tapestry techniques allow for a subtlety of approach, with wide-ranging methods of interpretation. Tapestry both introduces warmth and enhances acoustic qualities of a space.

A tapestry may mark a special occasion in an institution's history, celebrate the construction of a new building or provide an innovative approach to depicting a service, process, or product. They add a new, colourful dimension to a space, soften a harsh surface and improve acoustics. They are truly unique objects.

The ability of the Studio to produce contemporary works of fine art that will become part of the 21st century's cultural legacy is highly valued by its clients. Designs in other mediums by well-known artists are also interpreted into woven tapestry, resulting in works of art that reveal new and unexpected qualities.

Who commissions tapestries?

West Dean tapestries are being commissioned by public and corporate bodies, livery companies, hospitals and cathedrals. Private individuals, architects and interior designers often commission smaller pieces.

Tapestry through the ages

Woven tapestry is an ancient art form produced and valued by cultures throughout the world. The best known examples today are those produced by European workshops throughout the medieval period.

Tapestry was an integral part of medieval and renaissance interior decoration. They provided decoration and a display of wealth as well as keeping out the cold and damp. The vibrant colours and gold thread shimmered in candlelight. Tapestry was also portable, a form of decoration that could be rolled up and transported from residence to residence.

The skills and techniques of tapestry weaving have changed little over the years and at West Dean weavers are still producing works of art that speak of human endeavour and commitment. The designs of woven tapestry may change but its qualities remain constant. Tapestries speak to people on a human level in a language of warmth, colour and texture.
