NATURAL ORDER - Art, Science and The Clarity of Mud
THE WORK OF ERIC DOEHNE, KATHLEEN FOX, ALISON MILNER & STEVE SPELLER,
Until 17 June 2007

The association between science, nature and art, in which organic forms metamorphosise into a fascinating landscape of geometric abstraction, is explored in this exhibition which features the work of four diverse artists: Eric Doehne, Kathleen Fox, Steve Speller and Alison Milner.

The artists

Eric Doehne, a research scientist at The Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles, studies the deterioration mechanisms of inorganic materials. His art is without intervention and is, instead, a process of recording and analysing conservation issues.

Kathleen Fox’s formal artistic training was completed in South Africa and is informed by surrealism, African and Greek mythology and her readings in prehistory. The work embodies the principles of automatism whereby its form is inspired by the random patterns created by the micro-organisms living in the water and mud, which she throws onto a canvas and then encapsulates in melted wax.

Alison Milner and Steve Speller: Like a cabinet of curiosities, Alison Milner’s boxes are centred on an exploration into the significance and inspiration of both natural and manufactured objects. By removing these objects from their normal context and placing them in orderly fashion in boxes, her work becomes a taxonomy of form enhanced by their close proximity to the photographic interventions of Steve Speller with whom she collaborates. Speller’s large-scale photographs sprout membranes and biomorphic shapes in an explosive celebration of form.
