THE INTERIOR LANDSCAPE OF SURREALISM: A GLIMPSE INTO THE HOMES OF
EDWARD JAMES, ROLAND PENROSE AND LEE MILLER, 10 February - 18 March
This exhibition explores the Surrealist subversion of the interior through a glimpse into the homes of two pivotal figures in the English Surrealist movement, namely Edward James and Roland Penrose. At a time when most public institutions in Britain ignored modern art, Penrose, through his curatorial and collecting activities, and James, through his patronage, were instrumental in bringing the European avant-garde to the attention of the British public and artistic sector.
On show from the collection of Edward James and set within his surrealist environment will be the Lobster Telephone and Mae West Lip Sofa, a collaboration between Edward James and Salvador Dali, as well as works by Leonora Carrington, Leonor Fini and René Magritte. From the collection of Penrose and his wife, Lee Miller, will be a number of ethnographic objects as well as the chess set made in 1946 by Man Ray.
A number of items from the exhibition will be moving on to the V&A's exhibition Surreal Things: Surrealism and Design from March 29 - July 22 2007.
For more information on Lee Miller and Roland Penrose can be found by visiting their respective websites.
