FUNDING MY STUDIES

Scholarships & bursaries

Although many students are able to pay their fees in full, we recognise that some are unable to fund themselves throughout their time at West Dean. There are various ways in which funding may be secured. External bursaries and scholarships are available from charitable organisations, the competition for which is nationwide. A number of named bursaries solely for West Dean students are available from supportive trusts and benefactors. The Edward James Foundation is able to award a small number of bursaries each year. Finally, students can apply for Career Development Loans.  We recommend that you start looking early and follow the advice set out below.

2 PRIVATE GRANT-MAKING TRUSTS
A list of these is to be found in the directories mentioned below. They can be consulted in the reference sections of public libraries and information is also available on the internet. When applying to private grant-making trusts, do ensure that you are selective.

Most grant-makers have very strict policies about whom they will and will not support. Take time to find out their guidelines and apply to relevant trusts only, otherwise you will be wasting your time (and theirs). You should check:
a) Whether the programme is eligible. Trusts normally specify the causes they support, e.g. education, medical research.
b) Whether you are eligible: nationality, age.
c) Whether the trusts accept applications from organisations or individuals. If they only accept applications from organisations we shall be pleased to submit one on your behalf.
If in doubt, it is worth phoning the trust to ask for further details. It is always worthwhile double-checking the information you find in the directories as things can be subject to change.
