Pottery and Ceramics

Our pottery programme covers all the range of making techniques and gives students the opportunity to work with a full palette of clays. It includes courses for complete beginners as well as workshops for experienced potters.

• Throwing and turning, hand building, modelling, press moulding and simple mould making
• Decorative techniques including brushwork, stencils, resists, coloured inlay, slips and glazes
• Courses devoted specifically to earthenware, stoneware, porcelain or paper-clay
• Glazing
• Functional tableware
• Sculptural forms and vessels, including those on an animal theme
• Garden pots and large-scale ceramic sculptures for the garden
• Tiles

The Pottery

At the end of a course, students may either leave their work to be completed at the College, book a place on a one-day glazing course to decorate and glaze it themselves, or take away their pieces in the raw state for completion elsewhere.

The Pottery occupies a ground-floor workshop. Facilities include eight electric wheels, a slab roller, a spray booth, gas and electric kilns and an outdoor area where raku firings take place. A range of pottery tools are available for students' use.
