The 2,400 hectares (6,000 acres) of the Estate are situated on the western South Downs from the southern shallow dip slope to the northern steep scarp slope, stretching just over six miles from end to end. Of the total, approximately two-thirds is farmland with the balance made up by commercial woodland.
Houses and Cottages
Foundation staff and pensioners, including students attending West Dean College, occupy around 40% of the Estate's 141 houses and cottages. Over the last 10 years eight new houses have been built through a Housing Association to provide housing for local people at affordable rents.
