Chelmsford Cathedral – Contemporary Altar Front

In 2003 West Dean Tapestry Studio was specially sought by Reverend Judd, the Dean of Chelmsford Cathedral, to design a contemporary altar front tapestry for the Cathedral.

The tapestry depicts the Chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall built by St Cedd in 654 AD and the journey of St Cedd from Lindisfarne to Essex.

The new altar front, which measures 214cm x 100cm, is on permanent display at Chelmsford Cathedral.

Philip Sanderson, Creative Director of the Studio, designed and wove the tapestry.

Peter Judd said of the design, “The tapestry will reflect the depth of history in Chelmsford Cathedral, and particularly the story of St Cedd who brought Christianity to these parts in the 7th Century.”
