The Tapestry Studio at West Dean employs ancient techniques to produce their bespoke tapestries. Within its 30 year history it has enjoyed the indulgence of working with international weavers and clients and this contact has developed the skills and knowledge of this thriving Studio.

The weavers work on both low and high warp looms this is a unique aspect of this Studio, which allows it contact with the past and future.

Most tapestries are woven in wool, but the weavers also use cotton, linen and silk to convey the subtleties of an image. To enhance the awareness of the woven image the Studio dyes its own yarn and has done so since the early 1980’s and has records of over 2,000 colours. The dye laboratory in the Studio can dye any colour and therefore this insight into the dying process allows the weaver sensitivity toward the woven image that is very unique to the interpretations of this Studio.
