The Documentary Award tied between Paradiso (The story of this group of elderly musicians and their attempt to invite their former ‘enemies’ in their Protestant Dance Hall after 40 years. Their journey unfolds with irony and sometimes a bit of melancholia for a world that is about to disappear. Directed by Alessandro Negrini) and Bird on A Wire (This long believed lost documentary of singer Leonard Cohen’s 1972 tour was rediscovered in 3,000 pieces and re-edited by the original director Tony Palmer for this 2010 cinema release).

Rebels without a Clue
Starring: Rik Barnett, Stefan Gumbs, Cat Dowling, Lucy Brennan
Directed by: Ian Vernon

Rebels Without A Clue marks the feature-length directorial debut of photographer and short-film maker Ian Vernon. Blending expert cinematography with dark humour and memorable performances, it may be the best teenage sex/drugs/stolen car film set in the Peak District that you ever see.
All Damian & Mark have to do is buy a spade, bury the drug dealer's body, appease Damian's mouthy girlfriend, lose their virginity, and head to Spain. Easier said than done when the killer's in pursuit and you're...Rebels Without a Clue.

“One of the highlights of this year's Raindance Film Festival, Rebels Without A Clue marks the feature-length directorial debut of photographer and short-film maker Ian Vernon? The real credit, though, must go to Ian Vernon. A photographer and short-film maker of long standing, his varied responsibilities with Rebels saw him direct, write, produce and edit the entire film as well as compose and perform part of the score and handle all the visual and auditory effects. When funding bids failed he remortgaged his house to co-bankroll the project with Executive Producer and generous financial contributor Julie Monfils, and he is now tirelessly promoting it whilst working on his next project, The Best Little Whorehouse In Rochdale. The Ibiza Film Festival recognised his achievements by awarding Rebels the prizes for Best Cinematography and Best Soundtrack (a riot of Erik Satie and other quirky pieces), and also acknowledged the spunky lead cast with a shared ‘Best Supporting Actors’ prize. All were emphatically well deserved.”

A Happy Man
Starring: Remy Gerard, Philippe Agède, Vincent Bilodeau and Patrick Drolet
Directed by Robert Ménard

A Happy Man, “Le Bonheur de Pierre” is a touching politically incorrect comedy and triumph of happiness over human mediocrity. It stars Pierre Richard the comedy icon of French Cinema and award winning Quebec ; actor Rémy Girard. Rémy Girard is best known internationally for his role in the Oscar winning film“Les Invasions Barbares” (The Barbarian Invasions).

“Le bonheur de Pierre/A Happy Man" is a funny and surprising film and one of the best films I’ve seen all year. Pierre Richard in the role of Pierre Martin shows tenderness and never ending goodness. Rémy Girard, on the other part is the mayor you wish to never encounter. The actors are well directed and they really do a good job. I discovered Sylvie Testud, she is extraordinary in the role of Pierre Martin's daughter” Stuart Alson Publisher Independent Film Quarterly

A selection of Buster Keaton short films will be running on Saturday morning and Sunday morning we are hsowing Tim Burton's version of Alice in Wonderland.

The West Dean Festival will celebrate all aspects of the arts. It's a festival where people can come together to share their love of making music, ideas, performance, dance, film, storytelling, cooking and eating. All taking place in a breathtaking setting in the rolling South Downs near Chichester.
