Tom Kealy

I concentrate on ensuring that students are able to learn not only by the practical experience of doing it themselves, but also by the observation of demonstrations combined with a clear explanation of the processes used.
What will students gain if they come on one of your courses? They will of course learn new skills, but they will also gain a greater understanding of the tools and processes used when working with wood, coupled with an increased confidence in their own abilities.
Are there any particular techniques/processes you use in your teaching?I use practical demonstrations with close individual support as students work on their projects. On beginners courses students work on set projects, to ensure that essential basic skills are thoroughly covered.
What inspires your own work? The natural world, architecture, other crafts and skill based processes.
Where can students see examples of your work?On my website
Where did you gain your training? Experience?I trained at Parnham College, (’77 79). Aswell as running my own business I have worked with a number of designer makers, including for 10 years as senior craftsman and workshop manager in the John Makepeace workshops.
Teaching experience:I ran short courses at Parnham College before it closed. I run day classes from my own workshop and I teach annually in America at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship.
Professional groups and societies:I am affiliated with the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, with whom I have a guild mark for one of my chairs.
