Tom Benjamin

The emphasis is on helping each student improve their observational skills, drawing and painting techniques in order that they will have a range of tools to express their own way of seeing. Each student is encouraged to develop their own approach. Sessions begin with a whole class talk followed by individual guidance while students are working. Techniques are demonstrated to students individually and sometimes to the group as a whole. Reference is made through art books to a wide variety of artists’ work.
What will students gain if they come on one of your courses?I hope students will be more technically proficient, more able to work intuitively and more willing to experiment in their work.
Are there any particular techniques/processes you use in your teaching? In most of my classes students are working directly in front of a subject. I will often use practical demonstrations to help students with their work.
What inspires your own work?I paint landscapes working mostly outside in front of the subject. The sense of place, form and light in the locations I work are the source of my inspiration. I also love the physical experience of painting and the medium of oil paint.
Where can students see examples of your work?On my website, St Anne's Galleries, Lewes by appointment www.stannesgalleries.com and Alan Kluckow Fine Art in Sunningdale.
