My approach to my subject is relaxed but professional and I attempt to make the day both enjoyable and fulfilling. The materials we use are decorative and beautiful. Students are given an opportunity to learn a skill which is useful to them and one which they can then adapt for different occasions. During the course the students produce pieces of work that they can be proud to show in their homes or to give to friends. I use traditional methods but also demonstrate quick ways of producing a usable design.

What will students gain if they come on one of your courses?

Students are attending for all sorts of reasons. Some to explore floristry for the first time, others to arrange flowers for a special event or just to have a pleasant day out. I take account of their reasons for attending the class and, as we go through the day, students are encouraged to ask questions which I answer as well as giving further advice. This encourages a relaxed atmosphere as it leads onto discussions and an exchange of experience throughout the class.

Are there any particular techniques/processes you use in your teaching?

Simple but traditional methods to produce professional looking arrangements.

What inspires your own work?

Plant materials have a special beauty about them. Often as I look at natural products I am appreciating their beauty and how they can be incorporated into floral designs. Nature is a great inspiration and what better place than the surroundings of West Dean to be so inspired.

Where can students see examples of your work?

West Dean College Events and on my own website (currently being produced).

Where did you gain your training/experience?

I undertook training in floristry whilst living in London and subsequently managed several shops and a flower school in the capital. I also organised floral decorations for international events, London hotels, galleries, corporate headquarters and places of worship. I moved to Chichester several years ago and have continued my floristry work. I have undertaken the decorations for various local events and venues as well as those held at West Dean.

What teaching experience have you had?

Working with apprentices at various retail florists in London. Teaching at adult education evening classes and McQueens Flower School in London, as well as teaching privately.
