I try to understand what it is each individual student wants to get out of the course, and then help them to achieve it; to stimulate them to experiment and extend their range of experience; to employ techniques that suit their ideas.

What will students gain if they come on one of your courses?

Confidence in their ideas; an increased ability to get the best out of their ideas; the experience of taking an idea through stages of development to an end that wasn’t foreseeable at the beginning.

Are there any particular techniques/processes you use in your teaching?

None, other than using drawing as a way of testing and developing ideas.

What inspires your own work?

Anything I see: I carry a sketchbook around and make notes of things that interest me - elements from these drawings are often developed into more substantial images once back in the studio.

Where can students see examples of your work?

On my website or at the Portico Gallery in Riverhead near Sevenoaks in Kent. And on my website www.martin-ward.net

Where did you gain your training?

Bromley School of Art, RavensbourneCollege of Art (NDD Painting), Slade School of Art, London University (Dip FA)

Teaching experience:

20 years in 2 London art schools, and I’ve run a class for amateurs in France for the last 9 years..

Is your work in any public or private collections?

Herefordshire Education Committee; La Maison des Arts Georges Pompidou, Cajarc, France; my paintings and drawings hang in homes all over the world.
