Mark Hiner

I aim to enable students to make their ideas really pop-up by ensuring they have a thorough grounding in the fundamental techniques of paper engineering and then inspire them with exercises to liberate their creativity.
What will students gain if they come on one of your courses?Have you ever tried to make a pop-up card or marvelled at the ingenious paper mechanisms in a pop-up book? This course will introduce you to the skills and essential mechanisms that paper engineers need to design and make pop cards and books whether for your own satisfaction or with a view to publication.
Are there any particular techniques/processes you use in your teaching? The practical nature of my course provides the student with a ‘library’ of mechanisms that they can refer to which will help them turn their ideas into working pop-ups.
What inspires your own work?Pop-up books are magic. How can an apparently solid, 3-D object spring out of a flat, 2-D book? How does it work? Can I make the magic work?
Where can students see examples of your work?Look at my website for examples of some of my past work and a history of the medium.
Where did you gain your training/experience?I trained as a graphic designer at Norwich School of Art before studying for my MA in Graphic Information at the Royal College of Art in London.
What teaching experience have you had?I have, over the years, taught students at many art schools and colleges about the principles of paper engineering and run courses on simple pop-ups for children in museums and schools.
Is your work in any public or private collections?Examples of my paper engineering for pop-up books are in the Design Museum collection.
Have you written any books/had articles published? In addition to the many books, cards, advertising mailers and other items I have paper engineered I have written ‘Paper Engineering for Pop-up Books and Cards’ and ‘Up-Pops, Paper Engineering with Elastic Bands’, specifically to help aspiring pop-up artists.
Do you belong to any professional groups/societites?No.
