With total enthusiasm and a belief that everyone is creative and I can teach them the techniques they require to use that creativety and carry on making beadwork by themselves.
What will students gain if they come on one of your courses?
They will never be scared of colour again. They will discover a completely absorbing, creative craft and always have gifts for friends.
Are there any particular techniques/processes you use in your teaching?I bring a big collection of my own work, lots of inspirational books and masses of beads and bits to have an enough choice.
What inspires your own work?Where I live, National Trust gardens, all our countryside, everything Matisse did, Hockney and Winifred Nicholson too , Charleston House. coffee table books, Old Quilts, ‘50s textiles, putting a colour next to another and making them both wonderful. I could go on and on . . . .
Where can students see examples of your work?My sister Julie Phipps’s Gallery in Woodbridge Suffolk and most of my friends jewellery boxes . .or they are welcome to email me and I’ll happily send photos.
Where did you gain your training/experience?I trained as a Graphic Artist and worked in London Agencies and Studios. Then I set up a Design studio in Covent Garden – which is still going. I studied BA Fine Art at Canterbury. I now live on the beach and run my house as a location for film and stills photography and I teach here too.
What teaching experience have you had?I taught at the local Secondary school here whilst they replaced the CDT teacher who had run away and Adult Education in Deal until the paperwork became more important than the teaching to the authorities. I also teach Terrified beginners, watercolour.
Is your work in any public or private collections?Lots of private collections !
Have you written any books/had articles published?Not yet – but it is long overdue.
Do you belong to any professional groups/societies?The Whitstable contemporary Artists Society.
