Juliet Sargeant

It is really restful to have a comfortable, pleasant garden that you can look forward to stepping out into. In my teaching I demystify gardens & plants, so that students can confidently approach their own projects. I want them to create gardens that reflect their own interests & personalities and that also do not overburden them with weeding & maintenance. Gardens can do so much to help us relax & recharge our batteries.
What will students gain if they come on one of your courses?Students will gain confidence in the subject through my step-by-step methods and a framework for approaching previously daunting tasks.
Are there any particular techniques/processes you use in your teaching? My courses are always a friendly & informal exchange of information & experience. The great thing about gardeners is that they are always eager to share tips, so expect to learn from each other as well as from me!
What inspires your own work?People! I originally trained as a medical doctor, so my interest in gardens has always been ‘people-orientated’. I want to improve the environment that people live in, so that their lives are healthier & they are happier.
Where did you gain your training/experience?I studied for a degree in Garden Design at Middlesex University and we learnt our horticulture & plant knowledge at Capel Manor. I then went on to become a Registered Member of the Society of Garden Designers.
What teaching experience have you had?I have been teaching gardening & design for about 15 years now. I teach on professional courses and also recreational short courses.
Is your work in any public or private collections? My work is in collections at the Crafts Council and the V & A. I have work in numerous private collections, but most visibly at the New Art Centre, Roche Court near Salisbury.
Have you written any books/had articles published? With a colleague, I wrote a book about how to achieve a soft, natural planting style in your garden. ‘A New Naturalism’ Catherine Heatherington & Juliet Sargeant Packard Publishing 2005 ISBN 1-85341-133-7 I occiasionally also contribute to magazines & the Garden Design Journal.
Do you belong to any professional groups/societites?I am a Registered Member & Vice Chair of the Society of Garden Designers, which is the professional body for garden designers in the UK.
