John Robinson

For those students with no previous knowledge I start with a blank Book (folding of paper into sections, sewing, end papering, glueing, rounding, backing and casemaking) which can then be used to take course notes. Students who have some experience I structure the course according to their individual needs. These courses are very much hands on.

Understanding of the processes involved in different types of bindings, and for repairs retaining as much of the original character as possible. Also at the end of the course feel a sense of achievement, to have enjoyed working on the projects chosen and hopefully want to attend again to learn more.

The variety of work I undertake especially restoring antiquarian books to a high standard and when the customer is delighted with the result.

Six year apprenticeship during which I attended at Guildford School of Art and Craft. I was awarded the City and Guilds Advanced Craft Certificate in Bookbinding in 1966. I also received tuition from Bill Matthews in his workshop and with Bernard Middleton. Prize winner in the Society of Bookbinders Restored/Conserved Binding Category 1995 and 1999

Tutor at Guildford Art School in the 1970s, various day courses and West Dean College for over 30 years.

Private collections for Museums, Guildford Cathedral, Farnborough Abbey and the Queen Mother.

I have been approached by a publishing company to write a book but working full time and teaching has not yet allowed a slot to fit this in.

I am a member of the Society of Bookbinders and Book Restorers, Royal Life Saving Society Instructor/Examiner - GNAS Archery Leader - NSRA Air Rifle/Pistol Instructor - BSCA Mountain Bike Offroad Leader.
