I love teaching printmaking, silkscreen in particular, because it is such a “hands on” subject. Everyone comes out with a product at the end of the day. I could talk about the subject for hours but truly believe that there is no substitute for doing it. With printmaking you definitely learn by practicing, experimenting and making mistakes along the way, you learn by experience. My job is to inspire and guide people along this path with the benefit of my own experience. It never fails to surprise and impress me that I can give a diverse group of students from very different backgrounds the same instructions, the same materials, even the same colours to use and they will all come out with something completely different and unique.

What will students gain if they come on one of your courses?

They will learn some new transferable skills about making images in a very versatile medium in a lovely environment alongside some like-minded people.

Are there any particular techniques/processes you use in your teaching?

Depending on the length of the course, I cover waterbased screen printing and stencilmaking techniques from low-tech and hand made through to photographic ones. Students learn how to make and process positives. Then print and build up images of stunning vibrancy and colour using transparent or opaque stencilled layers.

What inspires your own work?

Old photographs. Old films. Old Books. Collage. Colour, texture and materials. Found objects. My own photographs and drawings, Dance. Physicality, The computer. The process of discovery. The process of transformation.
The endless possibilities when combining all of the above.

Where can students see examples of your work?
